Record 260/1139 Catalog Record Objects Exhibit Page Home Search Image 2 of 2 Description  A printed picture of a large Civil War monument in a park. It depicts an officer with a flag and sword on the top, two women in Grecian dress to either side slightly lower, and eagle below them, a plaque with handwritten description of Corp. Richard Reed's service surrounded by smaller plaques "Good By", "On the Field", "Woman's Work", and "Lessons of Patriotism". On the left side is a soldier and a medal of the Grand Army of the Republic, on the right side a sailor and a medal National Association of Navy Veterans. In the center in handwriting is "Corp. Richard Reed, Enlisted from Marblehead, Mass. and was Mustered into the U. S. service as a private Aug. 19, "64 in Co. A 4" Regt. Mass. Heavy Artillery to serve one years. The fourth Regiment was recruited from one years service and was composed of unattached companies of Heavy Artillery and these companies mustered into service during the month of August 1864 and were consolidated into a regiment by order of War Department November 12, 1964. They Were ? ? in the defence of Washington D. C. during their entire term of service and were noted for their good drill and soldierly command during their entire period of service. He was promoted to Corporal and Honorably discharged and mustered out of service June 17th 1865 term expired." In a smaller space below was written "This picture of the Easel Shaped Monument being the personal record of Corp. Richard Reed was dedicated to him Sept 15th 1894 by his wife 'Carrie A.'"
