| Abstract |
Diary of Samuel P. Stoddard, 16th Massachusetts Battery (Heavy Artillery). The diary apparently starts on April 18 1864 and continues until April 18 1865. He records the weather each day and his occupation during the day and includes a few words of the war news of the day. In seven pages after Dec 31 he recounted his experiences of the past year. He notes when he receives letters from home and numbers the letters he sends home. The last letter home noted was #130 on Sunday April 16, 1865. The final days' notes are about the death of President Lincoln. It appears he spent most of the year near Washington D.C. as part of the army guarding the Capitol. The book also contains printed information on: Eclipses 1864, List of Sundays 1864, Distances and times by RR from New York; Postage , domestic and Foreign; Population of various states of the US (including slaves), Stamp Duties, and an Almanac for 1864. |
