| Abstract |
Black/White border postcard of Floyd Ireson House. Taped to the back of the postcard is an old newspaper clipping (1913) that states: Down at Marblehead, where summer visitors and Boston yachts congregate in vast numbers, there is a horticulturist named Russell, with a flowing white beard, who raises beautiful sweet peas by day and who spends his evenings delving into the legends that make that part of New England fascinating ground.--Now comes this Mr. Russell, declaring that he has satisfied himself that the poet Whittier (whom he knew well personally) was (unconsciously) very unjust to Skipper Floyd Ireson whom he describes in a famous poem as ... for his hard heart Tarred and feathered and carried in a cart By the women of Marblehead. It ends with Mr. Russell claiming to have proved that Ireson really did all that could be done to rescue the imperilled man and that the Skipper really was a man of whom Marblehead might be proud. |
