In 1630, Governor Winthrop called the island Baker's Island but there is no source that explains why the name Baker was used. Until 1660, Baker's was public land owned by the Commonwealth. In the late 1660's, a succession of private owners owned the island. In 1670, so much wood had been cut from the island that Salem said no one could take any more wood without special permissions.
