Marblehead Jr. High Archives Historical Building Survey
There are many notable features in this home on 7 Surf Street. A stone foundation, dormers, elephants on shutters and fan windows. The interior features hand carved pineapple on banister, exposed beams and detailed carving on stairway and a panelled wall. The story goes that the house was occupied by an avid Republican named Hanna Wardwell who bought the lot in 1894. She was a world traveller and collected old elephants, hence the house received its name the Elephant House because of the over abundance of elephants in the house. |
