There are many notable exterior and interior features in this home. Thomas Bodkin, a brewer and merchant, had the house built. The original part of the house had a gambrel roof and was built in 1729. The brewery was added in the backyard in 1726. In 1756, when Sea Captain Benjamin Hind owned the house, he connected the brewery with the main house and added another part on the front right. Hind layed out Union Street between 1762-79. Before it was officially layed out, it was probably a cart path. The top of Union Street was called "The Way to Nick's Cove" in 1700 which connected Hooper Street to Nick's Cove.
