Description
Marblehead Jr. High Archives Historical Building Survey 201 Washington Street is important because Capt. Nicholas Bartlett, a prominent sea captain, lived in the house during the 1800's. Marblehead's history is deeply connected with the sea. The house is actually two houses combined. The first portion, a Colonial Saltbox, was constructed for John Kelly in 1689. The front door of this portion faces southwest on Bassett Street. The second portion was built in 1800 for Captain Nicholas Bartlett IV. It was a Federalist Style house but it resembles a late Georgian. This portion faces South on Washington Street. See Written House History on page 32.
