Abstract A 29 page booklet titled U.S.S. Mugford and The Great Lady. It begins with a letter from the Navy Department, Bureau of Navigation in Washington, D.C. dated Jan. 2, 1936, to Miss Madeline Orne inquiring as to her relationship to the late Capt. James Mugford. They would like to consider her as a sponsor of the U.S.S. Mugford which will be launched at the Boston Navy Yard in the latter part of 1936. Two pages (copies) of invitations to the christening ceremonies and newspaper clippings are included in the booklet. Copies of three letters addressed to Madeline Orne (May 29, 1945, July 28, 1946 and Oct. 11, 1984) regarding the Mugford are also included.
Also, three copies of a citation to Commander Martin Shellabarger, USN, from James Forrestal, Sec of the Navy, for the President, awarding the Silver Star Medal "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S.. Mugford - June 1944.
