Record 3703/5355 Catalog Record Archives Exhibit Page Home Search Image 2 of 2 Description  A Salem Evening News story dated December 30, 1996 of the 1926 bronze plaque that was spotted at Sack Antiques was purchased by Marblehead for $1,750 at an auction last week. The town originally gave the tablet to the Navy in 1926. The plaque depicts the schooner Hannah and was presented to the Navy on June 17, 1926 at Marblehead to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the U.S. Navy. The plaque was taken back to Washington on a warship. In September 1996, the naval shipyard in Philadelphia closed its operations and the Naval artifacts were sent back to various towns and cities and this bronze tablet, confirming that Marblehead is the birthplace of the American Navy, ended up at Sack's Antiques on State Street. The 1926 bronze plaque backs town's claim as birthplace of the U.S. Navy.
