| Four page document, "Copy A" of a $15,000 mortgage on the Schooner Martha Innis of Lynn. The mortgage was taken out by Mr. Joseph B. Lamper and William A. Lamper of Lynn on March 9, 1874. The mortgage was given by Milton Knapp and N. D. McCord, co-partners, of New York. The ship was built in Smyrna, Delaware in 1840 and was originally registered in Marblehead May 1, 1841; the ship's master was Aaron S. Higgins. The ship is described as "one deck and two masts...length is 106 and 5/10th feet; her breadth 29 feet; her depth 8 and 4/10th feet...she measures 258 and 31/100th tons...capacity under tonnage deck 183 and 10/100th tons...capacity on upper deck 45 and 21/100th tons. The mortgage was recorded at the Custom House in Marblehead. The copy was made on Feb. 14, 1882 by W. Coates, Deputy Collector at the Custom House, Marblehead.
An internet search found the following information about the Martha Innis:
1. March 21, 1883 (New York Times) in Vineyard Haven, it is reported that she lost her captain, Henry Higgins of Wellfleet, on the night of March 16th on a run from Boston for New York. It is supposed that he fell overboard.
2. Nov. 28, 1883 (New York Times) it is reported that she ran ashore on Great Point Nantucket, carrying coal from New Jersey to Boston. She was hauled off on Dec. 9 by the tug Confidence and towed to Hyannis.
3. Sept. 20, 1889 (New York Times) Provincetown, it is reported that she collided with the fishing schooner Charles Dyer of Gloucester while working into Provincetown during a squall.
4. Mar. 21, 1893 (Oswego Daily Times), it is reported that the schooner which was, at this point from Rockland, Maine, was given up for lost, likely during February gales. She left Vineyard Haven with a load of coal, bound for Boston, on Feb. 17, 1893 and was last seen that night off Cape Cod. Her captain was J. B. Speed of South Thomas. |
