Summary From the forward of the book by the author:
""
'From the Bridge' is the story of the light Cruiser MARBLEHEAD of the United States Asiatic Fleet for the period from her sailing from Manila on November 25, 1941until her arrival in New York on May 4, 1942. It is an impersonal recital of her war operations; her action against unopposed Japanese aircraft in the Flores Sea north if Java and her heroic retirement; her battle damages and damage control; her amazing seventeen thousand and eleven mile journey from Java to New York with no rudder control over three thousand five hundred and seventy eight miles of that journey steering only by use of speed changes on her engines. The facts set forth are an eye witness account supported by reference to her official log, her official report of action, the rough log on the quartermaster of the watch, operational messages - sent, received and intercepted, official Navy publications, and by extensive personal records of the author who had been directed by the commanding officer to keep a war diary."
