Abstract Colored postcard of "The Spirit of '76" by A.M. Willard.

Few people know that the original oil painting of this popular picture, displaying with so much energy "the spirit of '76" is in Marblehead, Mass. in Abbot Hall. It is a large life-sized canvas and well worth seeing. Painted from life by A.M. Willard of Cleveland, O., and exhibited at the Centennial exhibition at Philadelphia, in 1876. Bought by Gen. John H. Devereux, for $5,000. and presented to the town, as his son Harry K. Devereux was the drummer-boy in the painting and is still living (1929) at his home at Wichliffe, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland.
