In the colonial days, the minister of a church was one of the most important persons in the town. The Reverend Bradstreet was the minister of the Second Congregational Church, originally located at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Washington Street. His grandfather, Simon Bradstreet, was the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The neighborhood was filled with houses that helped to form the history of Marblehead. The Brimblecomb House, for example, located at 9 Mechanic Street is one of the oldest houses in town. It was built in 1713 by the Brimblecombs who were one of the first wealthy, important families in the town.
