Marblehead Jr. High Archives Historical Building Survey
The home at 199 Washington Street was owned by the Haskell family for six generations from 1809 to today (1976). It is located on one of the oldest main routes through Marblehead. Deed research proved that the house existed as early as 1781. It is within sight of Abbot Hall which was built in 1876. The selectmen and elected town officials hold their weekly meetings in Abbot Hall. Other town officials, such as the Town Clerk, Tax Collector etc. have offices there. The famous painting, "Spirit of '76", hangs in the selectmen's meeting room. Also, old town documents, some dating back to the time of General Glover and the Revolutionary War are stored in Abbot Hall.
