Page 54 has a short article about The Great Race which was run from Watertown at the bridge over the Charles River to Maddie's Sail Loft on State street to settle an argument as to which was quicker to cover the distance by land on the roads or by water down the Charles, make portages where ever needed such as the causway to Nahant and Marblehead Neck, down the harbor and up State Street. The only rule was that anyone who finished would be disqualified as they must have cheated to be able to finish.
