| Description |
Bas relief of 3 nude males and a horse "Stableman, Horse, Nobleman and Groom; Plaster relief depicting three men attending a horse; Original of Pentelic marble in situ on the Parthenon, Acropolis, Athens. From the west frieze depicting a part of the Panathenaic procession. Probable artists: Ictinos or Callicrates under Pheidias. The title could also be "Preparation for the Cavalcade", which may be a more correct guess than the preceding identification. The well composed and structured group, a difficult task on a relief, as well as the adroitly articulated bodies and poses, bear witness to the heightened skills, experience and sensitivity of classicism. Nonetheless, the picture remains a living tableau. It is a frozen action to be thawed by naturalism." This is a quote from a web site by Dr. Charles Apter of Truman University dated Sept. 11, 2001 |
