Description B&W photo taken on Washington Street looking south toward Pearl Street, showing three children sitting on the steps of a house. The back of the photo is labelled "Hawkes Homestead, 47 Washington Street. The Salem Directory of 1899-1900 lists William Hawkes, Jr., a tinsmith, as living at this address. The 1914 Directory lists both William and William Jr., both painters, at this address. No Hawkes is listed at this address in the 1886 Directory. The Hawkes family still owns this building (as of 2008).
