Description
A 1853 one cent coin found on Halfway Rock by William H, Goodwin after rowing to the island to search for coins on the island many years ago. A Marblehead tradition was for as fishing schooners passed Halfway Rock on their way to the fishing grounds they would throw a "penny" onto the rock to insure "good luck." This coin probably is one of those "pennies" In the Solomon Islands there is a similar rock called "Salvo Island" and it has been reported that Marblehead sailors during W.W. II would also toss coins toward the rock for the same reason.
