Description
|
| A commemorative plate for St. Stephens Methodist Church on Summer Street, issued c. 1959. That building was built in 1833, and used by the church until 1959, when it moved to a new building on Cornell Rd. The building is presently an apartment building. The back of the plate is inscribed as follows:
"The Methodist Church was officially organized in Marblehead sometime during 1791 - 1792, and consisted of only seven members. As membership rapidly increased they outgrew home meetings and the first church building referred to as "The Chapel" was constructed in 1801 at the corner of Rockaway and Pleasant Streets. The present church was constructed in 1833, and was renovated and enlarged in 1894. Once again the Methodist Church has outgrown its facilities and are planning to build a new edifice. This plate is intended to provide a lasting memory of St. Stephens Church on Summer Street." |
