Record 3372/5355 Catalog Record Archives Exhibit Page Home Search Description  Marblehead Jr. High Archives Historical Building Survey The builder of the home at 175 Washington Street was a sea captain. His name was Captain James Smith. He owned a blubber business. He had a plant on Nashua Street. The fishermen used to bring in butts of codfish at the second cove. The fish was taken up in carts to the plant where it used to be fried out into cod liver oil. The oil was taken to Boston on large drays drawn by four horses and sold. A great deal of it was used in the manufacture of sole leather. See the Old Horne House on page 24.
