Description
B&W photo of 17 men in full Indian dress, including feathered headgear, wigs, and some with darkened faces. This is the Manataug Tribe No. 1, Improved Order of Red Men(IORM). 10 of the men are identified on the photo. Additional information from David Lintz, Director, Red Men Museun and Library "The group is the Improved Order of Red Men, not Independant Order (note: since corrected) There was an Independent Order of Red Men, but they were a breakaway group of German speaking members. They lasted until the turn of the century, although many groups merged back into the Improved Order of Red Men long before that. The groups of the Independant Order were called Stamms. There were some Stamms in Massachusetts. The correct name of the tribe in Marblehead should be Manataug Tribe No. 1. It was the first tribe organized in Massachusetts (August 1, 1872). The image is of the Degree Team of the tribe. They were the ones who performed the raising ceremonies for the Chiefs. In other words, they installed the new officers in the tribe each year. The man in white is the Prophet (past president). There was competition among Degree Teams within the state and nationally for prizes and bragging rights.
