A B&W photo of a reunion of the 10th Massachusetts Battery, with 15 men, 7 women and 1 boy in the photo. The people are standing and sitting next to a monument labelled Tenth Massachusetts Battery; none of the people are identified - location of the photo is Gettysburg, based on labels on the back of the photo. The Tenth Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery, was a Civil War era Army group that existed from 1862 to 1865. According to Harper's Weekly, July 9, 1864: "This battery was largely recruited from among the hardy seamen of Marblehead, Lynn, and other small ports of the State; and sailors are famous as artillerists." The Battery was commanded by Capt. J. Henry Sleeper, of Boston. A veterans group was formed in 1879. On the back of the photo is a stamped label from "W. H. Tipton's Battlefield Views, Artistic Portraits, Principal Gallery & Office, Chambersburg St. Gettysburg PA." A handwritten note on the back: "M. H. Graves, Marblehead, Mass. 10th Mass. Battery" |
