Abstract This is a copy of the 8 October 1938 ship's newspaper from the USS Whitney Vol. 1 No. 47 dateline San Diego, California.
Page 1 An announcements that the contest to name the newspaper has been extended to get more names for the committee to chose from before awarding the $5.00 prize. A second item reminds the crew that the annual inspection is due and they can expect it soon.
Page 2. at the top is the publishing data about the paper. Next there is a gossip column.
Page 3. An Item "The Old Salts and the New" comparing the "Old Navy" with the current Navy, four small filler pieces at the bottom and an announcement of a "Smoker" which is a series of boxing and wrestling matches.
Page 4. An article which traces the words Gob, Leatherneck and Doughboy which are nicknames for Sailors, Marines and Soldiers. Then there are four filler pieces one of which is "Rather Than" a poem by Egar Guest.
