Marblehead Junior High Archives Historical Building Survey
The Curtis' (the world's first fliers) lived here. Greely Curtis flew with Otto Lilienthal and they started the Curtis-Burgess plane Company. It was a tenement in the late 1800's and that is how it got the name, Anthony's Chambers. It was also the home of a master mariner, John Russell in 1845-1857.
Sidelights: the house was built on Jonathan Glover's apple orchard. A "Humorous History " of Front Street and the house at 98 Front Street is included on page 1 in the Requirement Book.
Interesting facts on the Burgess Company and Burgess seaplanes in the Elective Folder. |
