| Abstract |
This file contains receipted invoices and other items pertaining to the ringing of the town bell or bells and care of the clocks. The items date from 1758 to 1843. They are in 4 units.
1) Seventeen invoices to the town from the men who rang the bells for the town from 1758 to 1797. They all are priced in Pounds & shillings except for the one dated 1797. The invoice for Striker dated March 15 1790 was signed by his widow Abigail Striker.
2) Sixty four invoices to the town for men who rang the bells for the town from 1805 to 1843. Besides ring the bell daily and for Town Meeting their duties sometimes included:
Toll bell for one hour for the death of Presidents Jefferson and Adams 1826
Toll bell for Chief Justice Marshall 1835
Ring bell for July 4th
Notify Meeting to draw Jurors
Notify sextons to ring church bells for July 4th

3) Five papers concerning the cracked bell at the Old Meeting House on July 4, 1817.
A) Town Meeting warrant July 14, 1817 signed by Jno Pedrick, Benjamin Knight and John Baily. Also signed by Joseph Cloutman, Constable.
B) A notice of a meeting of the Propriters of the Old Meeting House to appoint a committee to request the Town pay for replacing the bell dated July 21, 1817.
C) Report of a committee (not dated) to determine a cost to replace the damaged bell. It came to $128.40 for the bell with the Trade in of the old bell and $3.25 for transportation, signed by Calvin Briggs
D) A request to the selectmen that they call a Town Meeting "To Choose a committee to carry into effect the late vote of the Town granting a bell to the proprietresses of the Old Meeting House"
E) A petition To the Selectmen, Assessors and Treasurer of the Town of Marblehead from eight citizens who consider the vote to pay for the bell "not only illegal, but of a dangerous tendency to establish a president." dated Marblehead, July 25 1817.
4) Two petitions for James Nicholson to be the bell ringer. Many of the names are duplicates others are difficult to read.
